Jeffrey
A. Bluestone,
PhD
Among his many scientific achievements is the development of a monoclonal antibody that is currently being investigated for its ability to induce immune tolerance against early diabetes, psoriatic arthritis and transplanted islet cells. Dr. Bluestone is an immunobiologist recognized for his significant contributions toward understanding the biological basis for immunologic tolerance, having helped define the critical importance of co-stimulation in T cell activation, a required and ubiquitous element in the development of the immune response. He has developed and shepherded the clinical development of hOKT3-gamma (Ala-Ala), a humanized form of the anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody that is now in clinical trials for early diabetes, psoriatic arthritis and islet transplantation. His programmatic research demonstrates a firm commitment to the development of novel clinical applications while placing a high emphasis on the understanding of the basic immunological mechanisms of tolerance. With over 250 publications to his credit, Dr. Bluestone has garnered
numerous honors and awards. He has received the American Cancer Society
Faculty Scholar Award; the Cornell Medical School Distinguished Alumni
Award; A Guggenheim Fellowship; A Fogarty Senior Research Fellowship;
and an NIH Merit Award, among others.
