Overview
The ITN has established a Clinical Specimen Repository
to house all specimens from its clinical trials. Operated
by McKesson BioServices, the repository provides storage
and long term archiving of:
- frozen peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC’s)
- serum
- plasma
- whole blood
- RNA
- DNA
- tissue
Processing of nucleic acids (both RNA and DNA) from
whole blood is performed on-site at the repository according
to strict quality-control procedures and standardized
protocols developed by the ITN. With careful procedures,
the ITN has been able to achieve very high quality RNA
and high molecular weight DNA preps.
Specimen Collection and Tracking:
All ITN clinical sites are provided with pre-labeled
collection tubes as well as pre-labeled tubes for specimens
that have been processed at the sites. Standardized
collection and processing procedures are used throughout
all sites. Samples are bar-coded prior to shipping to
the Repository for privacy and tracking purposes, where
they are processed and routed to appropriate core facilities
for performance of requested assays. Any remaining samples
are placed in storage in the facility.
