Ten Year Symposium - Keynote Address

The keynote address from the Ten Year Symposium.

Jean-François Bach, MD, DSc is Professor  of  Immunology  at  Necker Hospital in Paris and is the Secrétaire Perpétuel de l’Académie des Sciences. He has had a long standing interest in organ transplantation and autoimmune diseases, notably insulin-dependent diabetes  mellitus  (IDDM).  His  main  contributions  include the description of E rosettes,  the  discovery of thymulin,  a  thymic peptide  involved  in T cell  differentiation,  the  description  and characterization of regulatory T cells in autoimmunity and the first demonstration of the therapeutic effect of cyclosporin A in recently diagnosed diabetic patients. More recently, he has described a  new  method  of  tolerance induction in type 1 diabetes  in collaboration with Lucienne Chatenoud using an anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody. This was first shown to work in the NOD mouse and extrapolated to human diabetes in a phase II trial.
